The chief of them are ten: Matsya (fish), Karma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha (Man-lion), Vamana (Dwarf), Parasurama, Rama, Bala-rama, Krsna, and Kalki. The following names in the
Sahasranama refer to the
avataras:
Matsya: srngi (797), the homed Fish which was in the waters of the deluge;
mahasrngah (536), the fish that tied up the ship to His great horn and sported in the deluge-waters;
rohitah (364), the red coloured Fish.
Kurma: - Mahadridhrk (180), He who supported the great mountain Mandara when the ocean was churned for obtaining nectar.
Varaha: - mahavarahah (538), the great Boar;
kapih (899), the Boar;
vrsakapih (101), He of the nature of dharma and boar: Varaha is called
kapih because he protected (pa) the Earth from the great waters (ka).
Narasimha: ---narasimhavapuh (21), the One whose form is partly that of man and partly that of a lion;
simhah
(280, 488), the Lion. Vamana: - vamanah (152), the Dwarf who asked for a gift of land from King Bali, and checked
(vamayati) his pride;
pramsuh (153), the Tall, who grew taller than the three worlds;
trivikramah (530), He who pervaded the three worlds with three steps;
tripadah (534), He who measured the worlds by three strides.
