Locke and Van Dyke stress mental  power and discipline, while Montaigne views the whole of the man, and yet all of them see eye to eye that the primary  purpose of education is the cultivation of mind and character. Namely, the improvement of man. Modern education throughout the world  has inclined toward the improvement not of man but of the things which are to be used by man.

Imperceptibly, however, the  tide is turning. Thinking men and women are not content with the mere gathering of facts but are concerned with the search for the deeper meaning of life through education. The end of education is man and not things.
