Karma and
Re-incarnation
Secondly, Indian thought has proceeded upon the assumption of the truth of the doctrine of
Karma and Re-incarnation. It believes in the immortality of the soul, that the soul is
beginningless and endless and that in its pilgrimage through the Universe, it takes
successive bodies, the nature and
characteristics of which are largely deter- mined by the conduct and action of the
individual when the soul passes from one body to another. The doctrine of Karma emphasizes the principle that as a man sows, he
shall reap and that he is the maker of his own destiny. It is unnecessary to discuss in
detail the full scope and content of the doctrine of Karma and Re-incarnation here. They
are well known to all students of Indian thought.I
have made reference to it because it is noteworthy that through the ages, the doctrine of
Karma and Re- incarnation has played a great part in moulding the characteristic features
of Indian thought oil all aspects of life. |
