THE FOUR SETUS

Vidura stresses the supremacy, of Dharma and next only are Artha and Kama as Dharma is the foundation for Artha and Kama. While Arjuna emphasizes the need for Artha without which both Dharma and Kama cannot be achieved, Bhimasena stresses the importance of Kama. The twins Nakula and Sahadeva clearly lay down that .all the three must be pursued by man and are equally important.

The last words of this verse are similar to the words already referred to in the Ramayana. Kalidasa in the Raghuvamsa beautifully expresses the same idea of the equal importance for man of all the four purusharthas in a poetic simile, wherein he likens the four sons of Dashratha to the four purusharthas, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha and says that the four brothers together shine as the embodiments of the four purusharthas. In Raghuvamsa,14th sarga, sloka 21, he says that Rama pursued Dharma, Artha and Kama equally, as was his attitude towards his three brothers.
