I have striven to dispel the wrong notion that the Hindu outlook on life is
entirely other worldly and life denying. Many western thinkers have lent their support to
this notion. The lives of great man like Mahatma Gandhi are conclusive evidence that this
notion is entirely opposed to Hindu thought. I have also pointed out that the
characteristic Indian conception of dharma has been unilateral and not dependent on its
perfor mance by others. This will also afford a corrective to the wrong notions about some
of our Dharmic ideals like the pativrata Dharma and putradharma.
In the next series, I have endeavoured to
show that love and service to humanity are the cardinal principles of religious life
according to Hindu conceptions. They are necessary for leading one to the realization of
God. The great saints and realized souls have, markedly exhibited the characteristic of
over-flowing love to humanity and unselfish service to their fellow men. |
