HUMANITARIAN IDEALS |

|
| It may also be
generally said that all the prayers contained in the Vedas are for purpose of seeking the
blessings of God for the welfare and prosperity for all human beings. No prayer refers to
the welfare only the individual who prays and recites the Vedas. The plural is always
used. For example in the prayer: Sannosthu dvipade sam chathushpade, a person praying to
God seeks the Lord's blessings not for purpose of his own welfare and happiness, but for
the welfare and happiness of all human beings and of all animals 'dvipath' means beings
with two feet and ' chathushpath ' means beings with four feet. The Vedas enjoin the performance of yajnas for various objects of desire
entertained by a person. It is said generally that the yajnas are performed for the
attainment of desired objects, such as a place in heaven. But it is accepted on all
hands that one of the chief purposes of the yajna and the effect of the mantras chanted in
the yajna invoking the blessings of God ar timely rains which arenecessary for
agricultural operations and production of foodgrains." This is referred also in the
Vedas. In the Bhagavad Gita in Adhyaya 3, sloka 14, it is clearly said that
from yajnas result rain." Manu is his Smrithi (which is considered to be the most
authoritative of all the Smrithis) says that the offerings made to the fire reach the Sun
and from the Sun the rain clouds are produced.
