ARE OUR CLASSICS WORLD-NEGATING?

Dr. Schweitzer is also wrong when he makes the statement that the text 'Tattvamasi' - 'That art thou' has not been given an ethical direction. On the other hand, Dr. Paul Deussen, the great oriental scholar. who has written specially on the Upanishads, is of' the opinion that the formula ‘That art thou' gives in three words the combined sum of metaphysics and morals. Its meaning as given by him is: "You shot love your neighbor as yourself because you are your neighbor."

Sri Sankaracharya has given an ethical direction to this great formula in the following words of his poem known as 'Moha Mudgara': "In you and in me the same Vishnu resides. Why do you unnecessarily without patience become angry with others?"
