ARE OUR CLASSICS WORLD-NEGATING? |
|
|
| The greatest
exponent of this point of view on the teachings of Indian classics is Dr. Albert
Schweitzer who has expatiated upon this theme in his book Indian thought and its
Development. In the Chapter on 'Brahmanic Mysticism and Ethics', Dr. Schweitzer makes the
following obser vation on page 45: "Love and pity for one's fellowmen are beyond the
horizon of these ethics ". (referring to Brahminic ethics). Brahmanic mysticism, he says, has nothing to do with ethics. It is
through and through supra ethical. Even the doctrine of 'Tattvamasi' is not given ethical
direction. These ethics do not demand that by comparison of one's relationship with others
one shall have sympathy for them and show pity towards them. |
