ARE OUR CLASSICS WORLD-NEGATING?

Intorduction

Western scholars who have studied our Indian classics have sometimes criticized the teachings contained in them as world
negating and not world-affirming. According to them, they emphasize the sorrows of life and the consequent necessity of ending the cycle of births and deaths in the world.

'They also say that these books regard the world as unreal and that consequently the teachings are non-ethical in character. They are said to enjoin more the duty of every individual to seek his own salvation than that of caring for the weal of his fellow men.
