Temples And Legends Of Tamilnadu Page5

While carving the stone for the image, the sculptor noticed a crack in a place where he had not touched with his chisel. He threw away the stone and started work on a second one. A crack was noticed in that also. This dejected the sculptor and he thought that he must have committed some sin before God. He had no other alternative except to pray to God for mercy, which he Aid. God appeared in a dream to the sculptor and told him that, before taking up the construction of God's idol, he should fast and observe silence for 40 days, and live on fruits and milk only.

The sculptor observed the discipline and then took up the work of carving the stone image of the Lord. In this attempt the work progressed very well without hindrance and soon the exquisite image of the Lord was carved out to the exact specification given to him. All and several others wanted to have similar images carved out by this sculptor for their temples on better terms of remuneration applauded the image.
