An anecdote connected with this temple is very interesting. It relates to the life of an ardent devotee named Abhiramabhattar, priest of Goddess Abhiramasundari. One day King Sarabhoji, after taking holy bath at the confluence of the Kaveri with the sea at Kaverippoompattinam on an auspicious day, viz. Tai Amavasya or New-moon day in the month of Makaram (January-February),paid a visit to Goddess Abhiramasundari on his way back.
At that time the priest Abhiramabhattar was deeply immersed in meditation before the Goddess and as such did not notice the presence of the King.Bhattar was enjoying the divine bliss to his heart's content, which was reflected in his physical appearance.
