The passage can
still be seen to a depth of 20 steps. The Sivalingam originally worshipped by Sage
Markandeya is still to be seen very close by.
It was ascertained by astrological calculation by his father Sage Mrikandu that his son
Markandeya would live only for 16 years. The day of his attaining the 16th year was not
far off. Markandeya could not go out as he was afraid that if he went to Banaras, Yama
might catch him on the way.
He prayed to God for
help to avert this. To his prayer the Lord consented by bringing Ganges to Tirukkadaiyur.
Along with it, a flower plant known as Pinjilam (almost like jasmine) was also received,
which was planted here and which forms the Sthalavriksham now.
