Temples And Legends Of Tamilnadu Page15

It is said that, at the advent of Yama, Markandeya clasped the Siva Linga fast to save himself from the yoke of Yama and Lord Siva cam e out of the Linga and killed Yama. The mark of this clasp is visible, together with the mark of the rope of Yama, which tied both Markandeya and the Linga. The imprints thus left are peculiar features of this lingam.

This adds to the glory of the temple and attracts pilgrims from far and wide.  The temple has 1622 acres of wet lands and 1022 acres of dry lands, besides 6houses and shops. Some of the lands of this temple were owned -by the French in the past. There are costly vahanams and ornaments.

There are 3 Teerthams. (1) Amrita Pushkaram. On one bank of this tank there is Amrita Siddhi Vinayakar temple. Devas got Amrita at this place. (2) Kala Teertham. Lord Yama created this tank. On the southern bank of it, there is a temple called Kaleswaralayam, where Kalayar worshipped the Lord and obtained a boon that whoever took his bath at this tank would get God's blessings. (3)Markandeya Teertham. This is the tank where Ganga Teertham was obtained at the request of Markandeya.
