The foul idols were guarding the four entrances to the Chola fort. The names of the idols removed are (1) Swarnaganapati, (2) Shanmukha, (3) Durga and (4)Bhairava.
This Durga when worshipped by the Cholas was so very powerful that the Chola kings have left an indelible mark in the history of India by their constructional work. With the blessings of Goddess Durga, the Chola princes were able to construct 1000 Shivalinga.
Kshetrams in their principality and performed the Kumbhabhishekam. When the Chola kingdom decayed, Goddess Durga was again brought to this temple and worshipped. People of this locality show great reverence to this Goddess who is
very blissful.
