Temples And Legends Of Tamilnadu Page3

This Sthala is also known as Vedapuri. A demon by name somuka, who was harassing the angels, wanted to learn all the Vedas. One day he snatched the Vedas from the angels and went into the sea. There upon lord Siva directed Vishnu to get the Vedas back. Vishnu approched the demon in the form of a fish killed him and got back the Vedas. They were brought to the Kapaleeswarar temple. So the place is known as Vedapuri.

Once Lord Vishnu, disguised in the form of a poor Brahmin, went to King Mahabali and begged of him three feet of earth. The generous King readily agreed and took out the Kamandala with a spout of pour water on the earth in token of granting his request.
