Temples And Legends Of Bengal Page4

Thousands of Hindus and Muslims vie with each other to offer shirni (oblations at the dargah). The first shirni comes from the Zamindar's family puja at the local Kali and Siva mandirs. Ghutiarisharif is a great landmark of peace and amity between Hindus and Muslims not to speak of the different castes and communities among them.

A large number of remnants of Devottar, Brahmottar and Pirottar still exist at Baruipur. These represent lands given to Hindus and Muslims from maintaining deities and offering pujas or shirnis. The varieties of deities maintained thereby are intriguing. One is Panchanand Thakur who is represented by two pipal trees that have got a built up platform. Another is Bisha- lakshi Devi, Bibima or Olabibi is worshipped to keep off cholera and pox from the village. Needless to mention that both Hindus and Muslims worship Bibima or Olabibi.
