THE MEANING OF THE TERM HINDU
Sindhu has three meanings in Sanskrit. It means a particular river now called the Indus, a river in general, or the ocean. Clearly Sindhu in the land of Sapta Sindhu refers to river in general and not simply to the Indus as a particular stream only.

It meant India as a great land of many rivers. The main  river in Vedic India was the Saraswati and in later times became the Ganges. So Sindhu  Sthana is also Saraswati Sthana and later Ganga Sthana, not simply the region of the Indus.
