| VEDANTA, UNITY AND UNIVERSALITY,
THE UNITY OF TRUTH |
|
|
Truth is not a
mere material thing that can be possessed by anyone. It cannot be owned by any particular
group, institution, or culture. No one can control, dispense, or rule over it. It is
beyond all saviors, prophets, holy books, churches, and temples. Truth is an internal
perception, not an external structure. It is an individual realization not a collective
phenomenon.
Truth therefore resides in our own direct experience of Reality and not in any external
place or person. It cannot be given to us by another, nor can any other person, whatever
they may do, substitute for our own contact with the Truth. Though others may guide us to
Truth, and such guidance is usually essential, the ultimate goal is the freedom of our own
Self-awareness, not subjugation to a particular belief or group. The ultimate Truth
belongs to the individual in his or her communion with the reality of being both within
and without.
Today people, particularly in the Western world, are worried about the influence of cults,
especially on their children. Actually whatever teaches us that truth lies outside
ourselves-that truth is not inherent within us but rests upon some external savior, church
or holy book-is a cult or a mystification. Truth transcends all externalities and should
never be made hostage to any of them or it is not truth but illusion. |
