THE GUPTA AGE

This cultural efflorescence spilled over to the frontiers of the Gupta empire and spread overseas to places as far away as  Java, Bali, Sumatra and Siam among others. We have evidences of their spread even to countries in the central and eastern Asia. Indian missionaries worked in far away China!

The University of Nalanda which functioned in this Age is the greatest tribute to the intellectual eminence of this Age. Itsfame reached the farthest corners of the continent attracting students and scholars from overseas. It also indicates the existence at that time of a great international culture with India as its centre.

Samudragupta issued a large variety of gold coins. He is the pioneer of Hindu coinage.
