AKBAR

Religious tolerance was a great factor that won for him the esteem of his subjects. He even married a Rajput princess.

Just as in the case of Vikramaditya, Akbar too is said to have patronised nine gems in his Court. Of them Birbal the jester has become legendary through the innumerable tales told of him.

Once Birbal wrote out a list of fools with the name of Akbar heading it and showed it to him. Imagine its effect on the Mughal emperor!

Akbar asked him: "What made you put may name on top of the list?"

Birbal replied: "You paid all the money to the horse dealer for the supply of horses. He will never deliver them."
