GURU NANAK

All the people at once knew that Nanak was not an ordinary man, but a saint. They also learnt anew the lesson that God is everywhere.

Here is the gist of Nanak's teachings: "There is only one God. Hindus and Muslims are not different people. All are one. God and God's name are the same everywhere. Repeating God's name is the only way to reach God."

On the basis of these teachings Nanak started a new religion. It is called Sikhism. It comes from the word Sishya. It means

disciple. God is the Teacher, and all of us are His Sishyas. Since Nanak taught it to the world, he is called Guru Nanak. His sayings are found in a b-wk called Adi Granth or Granth Sahib.

The followers of his religion are called Sikhs. They wear pointed turbans and do not shave their beards. Their temple is called

'Gurudwara'. They come mostly from the Punjab. There is a famous Gurudwara in Amritsar called the Golden Temple.

After Nanak, many other Sikh Gurus came who enriched his teachings.
