VIKRAMADITYA

Once Vikramaditya and Bhatti travelled up mountains and through forests.

In the heart of one of the forests, they saw a Kali temple. Near the temple was a lake. They bathed in the lake, and worshipped Goddess Kali. Prayed Vikramaditya: "Mother bless me so that I might conquer more kingdoms."

The Goddess appeared before him and said: "Vikramaditya, build a big city here, and call it by my name. May it become your new capital! You shall conquer many countries."

So Vikramaditya built a city there andcalled it Ujjain after Kali's name. You have read about Ujjain.

Afterwards Vikramaditya fought many battles, and enlarged his kingdom.

At the court of Vikramaditya were the nine "gems" or great men. Each of them was very learned in one Sastra or another.

Kalidasa was one of the "gems". He was a great poet. You have read of him too.
