UPOSATHA

In olden times, the Buddhists did no trade or business on this day. Villagers did not go fishing or hunting, and even schools were closed on such a day.

Ordinary people observe this day by wearing clean clothes and doing acts of kindness because it is a holy day. They remember the Buddha's teachings. These teachings are:

Do not kill

Do not take what is not yours.

Do not tell lies.

Do not drink.

Do not touch women.

Do not eat too much at night.

Do not use garlands and scents.

Do not sleep on a mat put on the ground.

If you have done a wrong, you must confess it to your elders on this day. The monks or the elders, will pardon you.

This is a very good practice and all of us can observe it.
