SAVITRI

Accordingly', Savitri married Satyavan. She lived in the forest ashrama along with her husband. She pleased everyone in the forest by her pleasing manners and faithful service to the elders.

But she never, forgot what Narada had said. To save her husband from an early death, she prayed to God incessantly. She observed many Vargas.

At last the fateful day which Narada had mentioned came. On that day Savitri went along with Satyavan to fetch firewood and fruit for the family.

When they were deep in the forest, Satyavan suddenly fell ill. He could neither walk nor stand up. He lay down on the ground.

Savitri placed his head on her lap, and fanned him gently. Her heart beat fast.

Yama, the God of Death, appeared before her. He rode on it buffalo and held a noose in his hand, as we see in pictures of the God.
