They took him to the palace And told the princess, "Here is a great pandit. You may ask questions. He will not speak, he will answer in gestures.

The princess then pointed one finger at him. The shepherd pointed two fingers, merely imitating her. Then the princess made more signs. The shepherd also answered with signs.

The pandits explained the meaning of the signs so cleverly that the princess was satisfied. Then she married him. But the next day she found that he was only an ignorant shepherd. She cried bitterly.

At last she thought of a plan, and said to him, "Go to the Kali temple tonight and bolt the door from inside.
