KALIDASA

Many great pandits or scholars came forward. But they could not answer her questions.

So they went away disappointed. They were all angry with her. They wanted to humble her.

These pandits saw the ignorant shepherd one day. He was sitting on the branch of a tree, and cutting the very branch on which he was sitting. They thought such a person must be the most foolish one could find.

They took him to the city. They gave him a bath and food and sweets. They dressed him properly. They tied a turban on hishead and made him look like a great pandit.

They told him, "Look. We will take you to the king’s daughter. She will ask you questions. Don’t open your mouth. Speak only in gestures. We will do the rest." The shepherd agreed.
