DATTATREYA

Many pupils came to learn at Dattatreya's feet. He taught them the truth about God.

Kartaveerya, a famous king who had a thousand hands, was one of them.

Dattatreva sang a famous book of poems, called Dattagita.

Sometimes you see the picture of Dattatreya with three heads and four hands, and four dogs standing near him.

This is meant to show that he is all the three gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva, in one. The four dogs are the four.

Datta in Sanskrit means, given.

Because God gave Himself to Atri, he is called Datta-Atreya.
