AGASTYA

On his 'way to the south, the Vindhya, a mountain, stood in his way.

He requested the mountain to bend as low as possible because he was a short man. It bent and waited for his return from the south. Agastya settled in the south and never returned to the north; and so the Vindhya has always been a low mountain.

There are many stories about Agastya. Here is one.

There were two Asura brothers, Vatapi and Ilvala. They invited rishis to dinner. One of them, Vatapi, was cut and cooked. Ilvala served the food to the rishis. After some time Ilvala would call out "Vatapi!" And Vatapi would come out tearing the belly of the rishis. Thus they killed many rishis. One day these Asuras invited Rishi Agastya, too, to dinner. He came.
