INHERITED PROPENSITIES

It would be the reverse of what the Gita teaches if the inevitability of qualities resulting from Karma moves us to contempt or cruelty towards others, instead of making us more charitable. The self is, in one sense, not the real actor, but in another sense he is. The Gunas have their roots in the body, lead the physical senses and the body, and hold the Spirit within as a prisoner.

The Spirit, however, can detach itself and over come the qualities. For this, however, Jnana is essential. Jnana is not a thing to be attained by mere study or meditation. It can be attained in a real and useful sense only by self-control in thought and action.
